Reading 1916: An Exhibition

A unique opportunity to explore the events of 1916 through its material culture, specifically the books, documents, private papers, periodicals and collected items held in UCD Archives and in UCD Special Collections.

DATE: February - May 2016

VENUE: UCD Special Collections, Belfield, Dublin 4

Take a tour through a series of visually stimulating and informative panels on the cultural background and history of the 1916 Rising. The exhibition will explore the events of 1916 through a myriad of materials, specifically the books, documents, private papers, periodicals and ephemera held in UCD Archives and in UCD Special Collections at the James Joyce Library.

This unique public exhibition is to accompany the conference – ‘Globalising the Rising: 2016 in Context’ that will be held in UCD in February 2016. The Reading 1916 exhibition will showcase UCD’s rich, cultural collections, setting this material in its historical and bibliographical context.

In addition a wonderful descriptive, illustrated booklet will be available for conference delegates and visitors to the exhibition in the UCD Archives.

Dr Lucy Collins

ABOUT:

Dr Lucy Collins joined UCD in 2008 after previously teaching at Trinity College Dublin and in the UK at the University of Cumbria. A graduate of Trinity College Dublin, where she completed both her BA and PhD degrees, she spent a year at Harvard University on a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship. Her research interests are in poetry and poetics; recent publications include the anthology Poetry by Women in Ireland 1870-1970 (Liverpool UP, 2012) and a monograph Contemporary Irish Women Poets: Memory and Estrangement (Liverpool UP, 2015).

 

Lucy’s work with UCD’s Decade of Centenaries Committee centres on literary and cultural events. She convened a symposium Yeats in Print 1889-1939 at UCD Library in May 2015, to mark 150 years since the birth of the poet. The following year she edited the book Signatories, which accompanied the landmark theatre event commemorating the 1916 Rising.
